Effects of short-term aerobic exercise in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis
According to extensive research, a workout on a treadmill and aerobic exercises had significant positive effects on postmenopausal woman affected by osteoporosis.
The intention of this study is to assess the effect of aerobic exercise with and without external loading on bone metabolism and balance in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Thirty-six postmenopausal women with osteoporosis were randomly divided into three groups: aerobic, weighted vest, and control.
Exercise for the aerobic group consisted of 18 sessions of treadmill walking, 30 min daily, 3 times a week. The exercise program for the weighted-vest group was exactly the same to that of the aerobic group except that the subjects wore a weighted vest (4–8 % of body weight). The Body composition of these woman, as well as various bone test densities were carried out and were measured before and after the 6-week exercise program. The results of the test uncovered that in the in the weight –vested group, fat decreased and fat-free mass increased considerably. After 6 weeks of exercise, results showed that the two exercise programs stimulate bone synthesis and decrease bone resorption in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, but that exercise while wearing a weighted vest is better for improving balance.
What this means is that if you know of someone, or if indeed you are suffering form osteoporosis then regular cardiovascular exercise combined with light weight training may actually reveres the effects of osteoporosis.
Just another benefit of exercise.
